Get Ready — The 2026 Trail Season Is Shaping Up!

This is the season we’ve been working toward. Thanks to over 100 registered volunteers, a growing list of approved projects, and a whole lot of community passion, TCVS is gearing up for one of our most ambitious years yet.

You asked if we could plan ahead — we heard you. While we can’t lock in exact dates just yet (weather, approvals, and funding all have a say), we can give you a solid look at what’s coming and roughly when. So mark your calendars, watch for our callouts, and get ready to show up.

Note: Some projects are subject to funding and/or approval. These are clearly marked below. All projects are also dependent on volunteer turnout and conditions on the ground.

Spring — March & April

Spring is all about getting trails into shape and tackling some long-overdue fixes before the busy hiking season hits.

Balancing Rock Trail — Vegetation Cutback (Late March)

Encroaching vegetation along the first km. of the Balancing Rock Trail needs clearing. This is a half-day or evening project with a small crew of 4 — perfect for shaking off the winter rust.

Balancing Rock Trail — Switchback Rebuild (April)

One switchback near the km 0.7 mark is due for a rebuild. Half a day or an evening, 4 volunteers. A satisfying hands-on project with visible results.

Williams Creek Falls Trail — Trail Benches (April)

•      Install 2 trail benches on the Williams Creek Falls Trail — a half day or evening with 4 volunteers.  ⏳ Pending approval

Early Summer — June

June ramps things up with infrastructure work that will make a real difference to trail users.

Balancing Rock Trail — Boardwalk Installation & Old Boardwalk Removal (June)

A four-day project with 4 volunteers. We’ll be removing the old boardwalk and installing a new one to properly cross the wetlands. This is a meaty project — bring your rubber  boots and your enthusiasm.

Fern Forest Trail — Boardwalk Installation (June)

•      Install 2 boardwalks on the Fern Forest Trail. One day or 2 evenings with 4 volunteers.  ⏳ Pending approval

Mid Summer — July

July takes us further afield with some exciting projects on trails that don’t get as much attention — but absolutely deserve it.

Fern Forest Trail — Numbered Post Installation (July)

•      Install 19 numbered posts along the Fern Forest Trail. This is a 2-day or 4-evening project with 4 volunteers — great for those who love precision work on a beautiful trail.  ⏳ Pending approval

Sanca Creek — Bridge Removal & Boardwalk Installation (July)

Two connected projects on the Sanca Creek Trail — note that travel time to this one is longer, so plan accordingly.

•      Remove the old Sanca Creek bridge and salvage the decking and posts (1 day, 4 volunteers)

•      Install 3 remaining boardwalks along the Sanca Creek Trail — planks are already in place and ready to go (1 day, 4 volunteers)

Season-Wide Projects

These projects will happen throughout the season as conditions and crews allow.

Annual Trail Checks — Blowdown Clearing

All trails need to be walked and cleared of blowdown at the start of the season. This covers:

•      Williams Creek Falls Trail

•      Fern Forest

•      Balancing Rock

•      Ka Papa

•      Monk Lake

•      Mt Midgeley

•      Sanca Creek

Nun Creek FSR — Alder Cutback & Culvert

We’ll be cutting back alders to Nun Creek along the Nun Creek FSR.

•      Culvert installation on the Nun Creek FSR is also on the list, pending approval.  ⏳

Pending approval

Signs, Boxes & Small Infrastructure

A handful of smaller but important tasks that keep our trails polished and professional:

•      Check and refurbish sign-in boxes on the Fern Forest and Balancing Rock trails; relocate to better positions if needed

•      Move the RSTBC blade sign at the start of the Monk Lake Trail

•      Install a park boundary sign on the Sanca Creek Trail (sign supplied by BC Parks)

How to Get Involved

Watch for our specific callouts as project dates are confirmed — we’ll share details on volunteer numbers needed, timing, and what to bring.

In the meantime, there are two things you can do right now:

•      Mark your calendar for the months above so you’re ready when the callout drops

•      Complete your volunteer waiver if you haven’t already — you’ll need it before showing up to any project

Complete your waiver here: www.crestonvalleytrails.ca/volunteer

Questions? Ideas? Want to flag your availability early? Drop us a line at info@crestonvalleytrails.ca — we love hearing from you.

See you on the trails. 🌿
