In 2017 a new local trail was completed by Trails for Creston Valley Society (TCVS). It now needs an official name. We are holding a “Name the Trail Contest” to help generate interest for people to contribute their name ideas to the TCVS selection committee. A gift basket of healthy assorted items donated by Vital Health, as well as publicized credit for the new trail name, goes to the winner who provided the chosen trail name.
This trail was originally a vision of Ralph Moore. Ralph played an essential role in progressing local environmental interests. Ralph recently died unexpectedly but before he died he suggested that TCVS develop a trail off the Char Creek Forest Service Road because he felt it was one of the last old growth forests in the area and he wanted to ensure people had easy access to it. We also thank the early loggers who had the vision to save areas of trees like this for their aesthetic and environmental value, even though cedar trees were worth a lot of money.
The trailhead is a 15 minute drive west of Creston’s old Summit Creek Park pullout and is off of the Char Creek Forest Service Road.
The trail meanders past a variety of spectacular ancient trees including “mother cedars”. This trail loop has no vistas. It is located within a narrow valley beside Summit Creek (close to the highway). Even though the trailhead is off Char Creek Forestry Service Road, Char Creek is nowhere near the trail. It can take up to an hour to complete the hike if one takes the time to appreciate the old growth trees.
TCVS has selected a grove of trees along the trail to be a memorial site called Ralph’s Grove. This memorial honors the good work Ralph Moore did for our community.
Presently this new trail has no official name. A name can last for decades or even centuries. It is important that we find a good name for this trail. The selected trail name will become the official trail name and will be used in signage, and referred to in online and traditional publications.
Please note the name submission period has passed and the submissions are being reviewed. A winner will be announced shortly.
